NP246

The NP246 is a transfer case family listed under Transfer Cases. All 12 units here are remanufactured and all are electric shift. The listings split into a GM group and a Chrysler, Dodge and RAM group, and within each group they are separated by input spline count and by whether a new shift motor is included.

What fits what

GM coverage runs 1999-2002 and 2003-2007, including GM 1500 and GM pickup applications, with one 1999-2002 listing titled under Chevy. Chrysler, Dodge and RAM coverage is 2006-2008 and 2009-2010, including the 2006-2008 RAM 1500 and the 2009-2010 RAM 1500, plus two Chrysler listings described as E-Shift. Several titles also name the paired automatic transmission: 4L60E, 4L80E and 4L60 with 4L70E.

How to identify yours

Input spline count is the first split. The GM cases are 27 spline or 32 spline input and carry Autotrack option code NP8. The Chrysler, Dodge and RAM cases are 23 spline input with an external spline front output shaft and a 32 spline rear output shaft, and carry Shift On Demand option code DH8.

On the Dodge and RAM side, speed sensor placement separates the year groups: the 2006-2008 cases have sensors on front and rear case halves, Hollander 412-615A, other number UMT318; the 2009-2010 cases have sensors on the rear case half only, Hollander 412-615B, tag number 52853301AC, other number UMT318-1.

On the GM side, match the tag number stamped on your case. Hollander numbers here are 412-394, 412-424 and 412-426 for the 1999-2002 27 spline cases, 412-395 and 412-454 for the 1999-2002 32 spline cases, 412-536 for the 2003-2007 27 spline cases, and 412-257, 412-487 and 412-648 for the 2003-2007 32 spline cases. Vendor SKUs run in the RTC246 series; an M on the end means a new shift motor is included, and the listings without the M state that it is not.

Core charge and warranty

These are exchange units, so a refundable core charge may apply. We do not publish a core amount, so call for it. Remanufactured units carry a 6-month limited warranty. A 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver are available on request for qualifying remanufactured units, must be arranged at the time of purchase, and are not automatic.
