S5-42

The S5-42 is a ZF-built five-speed manual transmission fitted to Ford F-series trucks. Every remanufactured S5-42 here is an exchange unit, and the listings split by engine, drivetrain, gear ratio set and whether the power take-off is in use.

What fits what

All applications in this category are 1987 through 1995 Ford F-series. Engine coverage is the 4.9L inline six, the 5.8L and 7.5L gas V8s, and the 6.9L and 7.3L diesels, in both 2WD and 4×4. Specific splits include 1987-1992 F-series 4.9L and 5.8L 2WD, 1987-1994 4.9L and 5.8L 4×4, 1987-1992 7.5L 2WD, 1992-1994 7.5L, 1987-1992 6.9L and 7.3L with power take-off, 1987-1995 6.9L/7.3L 4×4 with PTO not in use, and 1992-1995 7.3L with PTO in use and not in use.

How to identify yours

Every unit here is ZF built with front and rear cases and an integral bell housing, so the case shape will not tell you much. The gear ratio set is the first divider: some units are 5.72 low / 0.76 high and others are 4.14 low / 0.77 high. Next is the speedometer drive gear, 7-tooth or 8-tooth, and whether the truck uses an electronic speedo. Then check whether the PTO covers are fitted and whether the PTO was actually in use, because that changes the case. Finally, match the numbers. ZF ID numbers on these units read 1307-050-004, -022, -035, -038, -056, -057, -059, -070, -071, -099, -101, -108 and -110. Ford tag numbers include E7TA-HB, E7TA-AGB, E8TA-ARA, E8US-AB, E9TA-ABA, E9TA-YA, E9TA-YZ, E9TA-ZA, F2TA-HA, F2TA-JA, F4TA-EA, F4TA-EC, F4TA-GA and F4TA-GC. Hollander numbers are 400-02274A, 400-02275A, 400-02276A and 400-02276B.

Core charge and warranty

Sold on exchange – a refundable core charge may apply, and your old S5-42 goes back as the core. A 6-month limited warranty is standard. On qualifying remanufactured units, a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver can be requested and arranged at the time of purchase; they are not applied on their own.
