GM 8.25

The GM 8.25 is the 8.25-inch ring gear independent front suspension axle used under GM half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs. Every remanufactured GM 8.25 front carrier assembly in this category is an exchange unit listed by ratio and by axle tube type.

What fits what

Coverage runs 1988 through 2020. GMC and Chevy 1500 pickups are covered 1988-1991, 1992-1996 and 1997-1999. Silverado and Sierra 1500 are covered 1999-2006, 2002-2005 AWD, 2007-2013 and 2013-2018, with Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban and Escalade covered 2005, 2007-2012 AWD, 2007-2013 and 2013-2020. There are also 1999-2006 1500 pickup and SUV units and a 2015-2018 GM 1500 truck and SUV carrier.

How to identify yours

All of these use an 8.25-inch ring gear, so start with the ratio: 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 and 4.11 are stocked. The ratio has to match the rear axle, so read the tag on the differential or the RPO code on the glovebox sticker – GT4 appears on our listings – rather than guessing. The second split is the axle tube, and it is year-specific. The 1988-1991 units use an aluminum tube with a pin switch hole, the 1992-1996 units use an iron tube with a pin switch hole, and the 1997-1999 units use an iron tube without a pin switch hole. Some later listings are AWD-specific and some are called out as being with disc. GM ID numbers on these carriers include 22933066, 23145795, 23312173 and 23484384, and ID codes AAAY, AABS, AACC and AACT also appear. Hollander numbers include 440-01479, 440-01516 and 440-01568.
