AC Recovery Machines

A/C recovery, recycling and recharging machines handle refrigerant safely and legally. They recover what is in the system, separate the oil, evacuate, and recharge to a measured weight. How to choose

Start with refrigerant type. Older vehicles use R-134a, newer vehicles use R-1234yf, and the two must not be cross-contaminated. If you service both, a dual-gas machine or a second dedicated unit is the answer, since a single-gas machine cannot be converted casually. If you service hybrids and electric vehicles, choose a machine with a separate hybrid oil circuit so that POE oil never meets PAG oil. After that, look at automation level, since fully automatic machines run the whole cycle unattended; tank size and recovery rate; whether refrigerant identification is built in or needs a separate analyzer; database coverage for vehicle charge weights; printer and connectivity options; and the filter and oil service intervals together with the cost of those consumables.

Installation, freight and what is included

These machines ship by freight on a pallet. They are mobile units on casters rather than fixed installations, but they are heavy and awkward, so arrange dock or liftgate delivery. Most run from a standard shop outlet, but confirm the voltage listed for the model you choose. Machines ship without refrigerant, so you will need to source R-134a or R-1234yf separately. In the United States, servicing motor vehicle air conditioning requires appropriate EPA Section 609 technician certification, which is the technician’s responsibility rather than something supplied with the machine. Hoses, couplers, filters and oil are consumables, so check what the manufacturer includes.
