Ford 8.8

The Ford 8.8 is Ford’s long-running 8.8-inch ring gear axle. Almost everything in this category is a remanufactured 8.8-inch independent front suspension carrier assembly for four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs, sold as an exchange unit and listed by ratio.

What fits what

Coverage runs 1997 through 2019: F-150 1997-2004, 2004-2005, 2006-2008, 2009-2012 and 2011-2014 including the 2012-2014 Raptor; Expedition 1997-2002 and 2007-2008; Explorer 2002-2005, 2006-2007 and 2007-2010; F-150, Expedition and Navigator 2009-2012; and Expedition, F-150 and Navigator 2018-2019. A small number of listings filed here are other families – 200mm, 215mm and 226mm front carriers for the 2010-2014 Challenger, Charger and 300, and a 9-inch carrier for the 2007-2018 Tundra and Sequoia – so confirm the ring gear diameter on the listing.

How to identify yours

Ratio is the thing that has to match, and it must match the axle at the other end of the vehicle. Ratios stocked here are 2.65, 3.06, 3.08, 3.27, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 3.91, 4.10 and 4.11. Read the ratio tag on the differential cover or the axle tube – do not guess from the trim or the tire size. After the ratio, check two things. First, open or limited slip: several Explorer and F-150 listings are called out specifically as Posi LSD. Second, on 1997-2002 units, whether the front axle uses the vacuum disconnect – our listings distinguish 1997-1998 F-150 3.08 with vacuum disc from 1997-2002 Expedition units without it. Vendor part numbers on these carriers read like RAA440-121A, RAA440-1350D and RAA440-1384B, and can be matched directly against the listing.

Core charge and warranty

These carriers are sold on exchange, so a refundable core charge may apply and your old carrier goes back as the core. Every unit carries a 6-month limited warranty as standard. For qualifying remanufactured units a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a waiver of the core fee are available on request and are arranged at the time of purchase – they are not automatic.
