How to identify yours

GM uses eight-digit casting numbers on the block, and they are published on these listings – examples include 12569004, 12576177, 12576181, 12610176, 12612776, 12620287, 12629401, 12629402 and 55577377. Head castings include 799, 243, 823, 234, 5364, 12564243, 12590746 and 12611611; crank castings include 12552216. Casting locations quoted here include in the valley, the rear end of the block and the driver side of the block. The eighth digit of your VIN is the engine code, and codes B, C and J appear on these listings. Read the notes carefully on the V8s: Displacement on Demand (DOD/AFM) and variable valve timing are the difference between engines that otherwise look the same, and several listings are explicitly with or without DOD, with or without VVT, or federal versus SMOG emissions.

Core charge and warranty

These are exchange units, so a refundable core charge may apply and your old engine goes back as the core. A 6-month limited warranty is standard. On qualifying remanufactured units a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver are available on request and must be arranged at the time of purchase – they are not added by default.
