NV3500

The NV3500 is a 5 speed manual transmission. Every unit in this category is a remanufactured NV3500 with an integral bell housing, listed either for Dodge and RAM trucks or for the GM S10, S15 and Sonoma. The Dodge and RAM units are aluminum case; the GM units are described as Getrag HM290.

What fits what

Dodge and RAM: 1994-97 RAM 1500 4×4; 1994-97 RAM 1500 and 1994-96 RAM 2500 with 5.2L 2WD; 1998-2004 RAM 1500 3.7L and 4.7L in 2WD and 4×4; 1994-1996 Dakota 5.2L in 2WD and 4×4; 1997 and 1997-1999 Dakota 5.2L; 2000-2001 and 2001-2004 Dakota 3.9L and 4.7L, each in 2WD and 4×4.

GM: 1990-1992 S10, S15 and Sonoma 4.3L; 1993-1995 S10, S15 and Sonoma 4.3L in 2WD and 4×4; 1996-1997 S10, S15 and Sonoma 4.3L; 1998-2003 S10 and S15 4.3L; and 1998-2005 S10, S15 and Sonoma 4.3L with internal slave.

How to identify yours

Use the Hollander number and the ID on the case. Dodge and RAM IDs listed here include 52107813, 52107814, 53006633, 5108120, 52107920AA, 52108228AB and 52108229AB. GM IDs include GAXP, GAYH, GBKX, GBNK, GAPX, GAYF, GBKW and GBNJ. Hollander numbers run 400-02645 through 400-03938 on the Dodge and RAM units and 400-02397B through 400-04314 on the GM units.

Three details separate similar units. On the Dakota, verify the shifter pocket: its top sits 1/8 inch above the shifter stub mounting surface on the 2000-01 units and 5/8 inch on the 2001-04 units. On the GM units, measure from the front of the bellhousing to the back of the shifter, 18.5 inches on the 1996-1997 listings and 25.5 inches on the 1998-2005 listings. Then check the shift mechanism: the 1990-1992 GM unit is 3 rail with an external slave cylinder and an aluminum shifter pod, the 1993-1995 units are single rail with an external slave cylinder and a plastic-composite shifter pod, and the 1996 and later units are single rail with an internal slave cylinder. Several GM listings note that ratios may vary.
