NV4500

The NV4500 is a cast-iron, five-speed New Venture manual transmission built for three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks. Every remanufactured NV4500 in this category is an exchange unit, and the listings are split by application, output shaft and case details rather than sold as one generic part.

What fits what

GM coverage runs 1991 through 2007: 1991-1994 and 1994-1995 pickups in 2WD and 4×4, 1992-2000 P-series step vans, 1994-1998 C3500HD, 1996-1998 K2500 and K3500, 1999-2004 pickups, 1999-2002 6.5L 2WD, 2001-2002 C3500HD with the 8.1L, and 2001-2007 Silverado 2500 and 3500. Dodge and RAM coverage runs 1992 through 2005: 1992-1993 D-series and W-series, 1994-1997 5.2L and 5.9L gas, 1994-2002 8.0L and diesel in 2WD and 4×4, 1998-2001 2500 and 3500 5.9L, 2001-2004 2500 and 3500, and 2003-2005 5.7L.

How to identify yours

All of these use a cast iron main case with a square four-bolt shift tower and an aluminum top cover. The separators are in the castings and the shafts. Top cover castings listed here include 18860, 17321 and 33893; main case castings 16812, 18157, 23167, 25137 and 33903; tail housing castings 16808, 17060, 17106, 18306, 23337 and 25868. Output shafts are 23 or 29 spline, the rear yoke is held on by either a nut or a bolt, and the yoke seal surface measures 1.771 or 1.886 inches. Also check whether reverse is synchronized, whether the bell housing is detachable, whether the slave cylinder is internal or external, and whether the tail housing carries an emergency brake mount (the brake itself is not included). Hollander numbers on these units include 400-02622, 400-02623, 400-02624, 400-03101, 400-03918 and 400-03919; some carry ID 52108131 or 52108131AC.

Core charge and warranty

Sold as an exchange unit – a refundable core charge may apply and your old NV4500 goes back as the core. A 6-month limited warranty is standard. On qualifying remanufactured units you can request a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a waiver of the core fee; both are arranged at the time of purchase and are not automatic.
