M5R1

The M5R1 is an all-aluminum five-speed manual transmission used by Ford. Remanufactured M5R1 transmissions in this category are exchange units, listed individually because Ford ran several speedometer and shift variants across the same years.

What fits what

Applications here run 1988 through 2011, and they are all Ford Ranger, Explorer and Bronco II or the Mazda B-series equivalents. Engine splits are 2.3L, 2.5L, 2.9L, 3.0L and 4.0L, in both 2WD and 4×4: 1988-1994 Ranger and 1994 B2300 2.3L; 1988-1992 Ranger and 1988-1990 Bronco II 2.9L; 1990-1994 Ranger and Explorer 4.0L; 1991-1994 Ranger 3.0L; 1995-1997 Ranger and B-series 3.0L and 4.0L; 1995-1997 B2300 2.3L; 1998-2001 Ranger and B2500 2.5L; 1998-2004 Ranger and Explorer 4.0L; 2001-2011 Ranger and Explorer 4.0L; and 2001-2011 Ranger and B2300 2.3L.

How to identify yours

Every unit here is all aluminum with the shift lever bolted into the top cover, so the differences are in the small parts. Check the top cover for one switch or two. Check the shifter stub length – 5 inches or 4-5/8 inches. Check whether the tail housing has a transfer case shifter mounting boss. Most important is the speedometer: some units use a gear-driven mechanical speedo with a 6-tooth purple, 7-tooth white or 8-tooth green drive gear, the 1998-2001 2.5L units have no speedo gear or vehicle speed sensor at all, some use a reluctor wheel for the VSS, and the 2001-2011 2.3L units use a magnetic VSS. Tag numbers cast on these cases include E87A-NC through E87A-NG, E87A-FC, E87A-FF, E97A-EA, F17A-LB, F27A-UA, F27A-VA, F57A-AA, F57A-CA, F57A-EA and F67A-AAA. Hollander numbers include 400-02267, 400-02269, 400-02433C, 400-02453, 400-03108 and 400-03300.

These are exchange units, so a refundable core charge may apply and your old M5R1 returns as the core. A 6-month limited warranty is standard on every unit.
