NP243

The NP243 is a transfer case listed here under Transfer Cases. Nine remanufactured units are on this page and every one of them is electric shift. Coverage splits into two groups: Chrysler, Dodge and RAM from 2002 through 2012, and GM 1500 from 1996 to 1999. Every Chrysler-group listing here is called out as a 2nd generation case.

What fits what

On the Chrysler side there are units for 2006-2012 Chrysler E-Shift, 2006-2007 Chrysler E-Shift, 2006-2011 Dodge Dakota and Raider, 2007-2009 Dodge Dakota, 2006 Dodge Dakota, 2006-2012 RAM 1500 and 2002-2005 RAM 1500. On the GM side there are two 1996-1999 1500 units, and they are split by which transmission the truck has: one is listed for the 4L80E and one for the 4L60E.

How to identify yours

Start with the input. The Chrysler-group cases are all 23 spline with 0.84 inch of exposed length on the input shaft. The GM cases are not interchangeable with those or with each other: the 4L80E unit is a 32 spline input and the 4L60E unit is a 27 spline input.

Next, the front output. Some listings use an external spline front output shaft, others a cup style front output yoke, and the two GM units use a bolt on front output yoke. Rear output is 32 spline on the Chrysler group and a slip yoke style on the GM units.

Then the shift shaft, which separates otherwise similar Chrysler cases: most are described as star shaped, but the 2002-2005 RAM 1500 unit is round with two flat spots. The Chrysler group is listed with no shift indicator switch; both GM units have a three prong shift indicator switch and a speed sensor hole.

Read the shift motor line before you order. Two listings on this page state that a new shift motor is included; the other seven state that the shift motor is not included. Finally, match the tag number, which is the most reliable identifier here. Tag numbers on this page read like 52853307AA, 52123016AA, 52123016AB, 52123108AA and 52123108AB on the Chrysler group, and 15045749, 15052508, 15736237 or 24228430 on the GM units. Hollander numbers listed include 412-338, 412-339, 412-467, 412-614, 412-663, 412-673, 412-51305 and 412-51306, and vendor SKUs run in the RTC243D and RTC243G series.

Core charge and warranty

These are exchange units, so a refundable core charge may apply and your old case goes back as the core. A 6-month limited warranty is standard. On qualifying remanufactured units a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver are available on request and must be arranged at the time of purchase; neither is automatic.
