BW4405

Six remanufactured BW4405 transfer cases are listed here, under Transfer Cases, covering Ford and Mercury applications. Five are electric shift with Torque On Demand and one is a manual shift unit. The electric shift cases come in pairs: the same application is listed once with a new shift motor included and once without. Check which one you need, because a case without a motor will not shift on its own.

What fits what

Coverage runs 1995-2001. The 1995-1997 Explorer case is offered as RTC4405F-2M with a new shift motor and RTC4405F-2 without one. The 1998-2001 Ford and Explorer or Mountaineer case is RTC4405F-1M with a new shift motor and RTC4405F-1 without. The 1996-1998 Explorer case is RTC4405F-3, electric shift, shift motor not included. The manual shift case, RTC4405F-3M, is listed for 1996-1998 Ford and Mercury. That manual listing carries the model number BW1356 in its data even though the title says BW4405, so confirm it before ordering.

How to identify yours

Use the tag number on the case. The 1995-1997 Explorer units carry tags F57A-CA and F75A-CA, Hollander number 412-350, other number UMT418, and have a 4 bolt U-joint style front output yoke with a speedo hole. The 1998-2001 units carry tags F87A-CA, XL24-AA, XL24-CA, XL24-CB and YL24-AA, Hollander numbers 412-385 and 412-386A through 412-386D, other number UMT424, and have a 6 bolt cup style front output yoke with no speedo hole. The 1996-1998 Explorer unit carries tags F77A-GA and F67A-RA, Hollander number 412-437, other number UMT428, with a 6 bolt cup style front output yoke and a speedo hole. All of those have a circular rear output yoke and front and rear speed sensor holes. The manual unit carries tags E7TA-AA, E7TA-AB, E7TA-GA, E7TA-GB, E8TA-AA and E8TA-CA, Hollander number 412-202A, other number UMT415-2, with a slip yoke style rear output shaft, a bolt on front output yoke, no PTO opening and a yellow 7 tooth speedo gear on the mainshaft.

Core charge and warranty

These are exchange units and a refundable core charge may apply. No amount is published, so call for it. A 6-month limited warranty is standard. A 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver are available on request for qualifying remanufactured units, must be arranged at the time of purchase, and are not automatic.
