Transmissions
Remanufactured transmissions at Variety Engines are mostly manual gearboxes – five- and six-speed units built by New Venture, Borg-Warner, ZF, Getrag and Tremec – along with a smaller group of automatics including the GM 6L80, 8L90E and the Chrysler A578.
What fits what
Listings cover model years 1983 through 2023. Ford is the deepest coverage: M5R1 for Ranger, Explorer, Bronco II and Mazda B-series; S5-42 and S5-47 ZF five-speeds for 1987-1995 F-series with 4.9L, 5.8L, 6.9L, 7.3L and 7.5L engines; T5 for Mustang; TR3650 and TR6060; FM145 and MT82. Jeep and Chrysler are covered by AX5, AX15, NSG370, G56 and C635. GM runs NV4500, NV3500, HM290, T5, T56 and AR5. There is also Subaru TY754 and TY758, Toyota C56 and C59, Mazda G35M-R, Honda APG6 and E5GT, and VW 02M, 02Q and 0A4.
How to identify yours
Start with the Hollander interchange number, written as 400-xxxxx, which appears on most listings here. Then match the physical details we publish under “Additional information”: case material (the NV4500 is cast iron, the M5R1 is all aluminum), integral versus detachable bell housing, internal versus external slave cylinder, top cover and main case casting numbers such as 18860, 17321, 16812 and 18157, shifter stub length of 5 inches or 4-5/8 inches, and the speedo drive gear by tooth count and color – 6-tooth purple, 7-tooth white, 8-tooth green. Tag numbers cast or stamped on the case (for example E87A-NC or F57A-CA on Ford units) are the final confirmation.
Core charge and warranty
These are exchange units, so a refundable core charge may apply and your old transmission goes back as the core. Every transmission carries a 6-month limited warranty as standard. For qualifying remanufactured units, a 7-year / 1,000,000-mile extended warranty and a core fee waiver can be arranged on request at the time of purchase; neither is added automatically. If you are unsure which variant you have, call 440-374-1039 with your VIN and we will confirm before it ships.
