Manual Transmission Identification: How to Find the Right Unit
Manual transmissions are identified by a bewildering mix of model codes, tag numbers and casting marks — and unlike automatics, there is rarely a single sticker that tells you everything. Getting it wrong is expensive, because a transmission that bolts up can still be the wrong ratio set, the wrong input spline, or missing a provision your vehicle needs.
Here is how to identify a manual gearbox properly, and what actually has to match.
Start with the tag, not the model year
Most manual transmissions carry an identification tag, commonly bolted to the case or stamped directly into it. Depending on the manufacturer, this gives you some combination of a model designation, an assembly number, a build date and a ratio code.
Vehicle year and engine alone are not enough. Manufacturers frequently changed transmissions mid-year, offered more than one gearbox on the same engine, and used the same case with different internals for different final-drive requirements.
Know the common families
A few families account for most of what you will encounter in trucks and rear-drive applications:

- Tremec — T5, T56, TR6060 and similar, common in performance and rear-drive car applications.
- NSG370, G56, MT82 — later six-speeds across Jeep, Dodge and Ford.

The five things that must match

1. Input shaft length and spline count
The input shaft has to match your clutch disc and pilot bearing. Spline count and shaft length both vary within a single transmission model depending on the engine it was mated to. A 10-spline input will not work with a 14-spline clutch disc, and a shaft that is too long or short will not engage the pilot correctly.
2. Bellhousing pattern
The transmission has to bolt to your engine. Some transmissions were offered with more than one bellhousing pattern, or with a removable bellhousing that can be swapped. Confirm the pattern rather than assuming it follows from the vehicle.
3. Output spline count and shaft type
The output has to match either your driveshaft yoke or, on four-wheel-drive vehicles, the input of your transfer case. This is where two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions of the same transmission diverge — the tailhousing and output shaft are different, and they are not interchangeable without changing both.
4. Gear ratios
The same transmission model was often built with more than one ratio set. A gearbox with a deeper first gear suits heavy loads and low-speed work; a taller set suits highway use. Both bolt in identically. If the ratios differ from your original, the vehicle will drive differently even though nothing is technically wrong.
5. PTO provision, shift pattern and sensors
Some heavy-duty units include a power take-off opening; some do not. Later transmissions carry vehicle speed sensors, reverse lockout solenoids or back-up light switches that your harness expects to find. Missing provisions are not fatal, but they are much cheaper to discover before installation than after.
Two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive
This deserves its own warning because it catches people out constantly. A 2WD and a 4WD version of the same transmission share a model number and look broadly similar, but the tailshaft housing and output shaft are different. The 4WD version is built to mate to a transfer case; the 2WD version terminates in a slip yoke for a driveshaft.
You cannot simply bolt a transfer case to a 2WD unit. Always confirm which configuration you are buying, and check that the transfer case input matches.
If the tag is gone
On a high-mileage vehicle the tag is often missing or illegible. In that case, work from:
- Casting numbers on the main case and tailhousing.
- The number of bolts on the top cover and the shift tower location.
- Physical measurements — input shaft length, spline count, overall case length.
- Your VIN, which identifies the drivetrain the vehicle left the factory with.
A photograph of the case from the side, plus the input spline count, is usually enough for us to identify a unit. Send it over before ordering.
What to check on arrival
Before your installer books time on the vehicle, verify the unit against your original: input spline count and length, output configuration, bellhousing pattern, and the presence of any sensors or switches your harness needs. Rotate the input by hand and confirm it turns smoothly through all gears.
Every check you do on the bench costs minutes. Every check you skip costs a second removal.
