How to Identify the Right Transfer Case for Your Truck
Transfer cases are one of the hardest drivetrain parts to buy correctly. Two units can share a model number, fit the same truck, the same year and the same engine — and still be completely wrong for your vehicle. The difference usually comes down to details that never appear in a listing title: how the case shifts, what the input spline count is, and whether there is a speedometer provision.
This guide walks through how to identify the transfer case you actually need, in the order the information matters.
Step 1: find the tag before you do anything else
Almost every transfer case carries an identification tag, usually a metal plate on the rear housing or riveted near the output. It gives you the model, an assembly or part number, and often a low-range ratio. That tag is worth more than any amount of guessing from the vehicle spec.
If the tag is missing or unreadable — which happens on high-mileage trucks — you can still narrow it down from the casting numbers on the housing itself, combined with the vehicle’s VIN and drivetrain configuration.
Step 2: identify the family
Most units you will encounter come from a handful of families. The prefix tells you the manufacturer:

- NP / NV — New Process and New Venture Gear, used extensively across GM, Dodge and Jeep. Common units include the NP231, NP241, NP242 and NP273.
- BW — BorgWarner, dominant on Ford applications. The BW1356, BW4406 and BW4412 are among the most frequently replaced.
- MP — Magna Powertrain, largely later GM applications such as the MP1625, MP3023 and MP3024.
- ATC — typically found on BMW and some import applications.
Knowing the family narrows the field, but it is not sufficient on its own. The BW1356 alone was fitted across a wide range of Ford trucks in several distinct configurations.
Step 3: manual shift or electric shift
This is the distinction that trips up most buyers, and it is not optional — the two are not interchangeable without changing the shift mechanism.
- Manual shift uses a mechanical lever on the floor, connected directly to the shift shaft on the case.
- Electric shift uses a dash-mounted selector and an electric shift motor mounted on the rear of the case.
If your truck has a floor lever, you need a manual-shift case. If it has push-buttons or a rotary dial on the dash, you need an electric-shift case — and you need to confirm whether a shift motor is included, because they are frequently sold separately and are not cheap.
Step 4: check the input spline count
The input shaft of the transfer case has to match the output of your transmission. Spline counts vary within the same transfer case model depending on which transmission it was bolted to. A 23-spline input will not mate to a 27-spline transmission output, regardless of how well everything else matches.
Count the splines on your existing unit, or identify your transmission first and work forward from there. This single check prevents the most expensive category of mistake — discovering the mismatch after the old unit is already out of the truck.
Step 5: confirm the output and yoke style
Rear output configurations differ in ways that affect whether your existing driveshaft will bolt up:
- Slip yoke — the driveshaft slides into the case on a splined output shaft.
- Fixed yoke / flange — the driveshaft bolts to a flange on the case.
Front output yokes vary too, between bolt-on and cupped styles. If the yoke style differs from your original, you will need to change the yoke or the driveshaft, so factor that in before ordering.
Step 6: speedometer provision
Older transfer cases drive the speedometer mechanically, using a gear inside the case. The gear tooth count is matched to the vehicle’s tyre size and axle ratio — and the colour of the gear often indicates the tooth count. Newer units use an electronic vehicle speed sensor instead.
If your vehicle uses a mechanical speedometer drive and the replacement case has no provision for it, your speedometer will not work. Check for the speedo hole before you buy.
Step 7: match the low-range ratio
Most transfer cases use a low range in the region of 2.6:1 to 2.7:1, but some applications — particularly heavy-duty and off-road variants — use considerably lower ratios. Mixing ratios across axles on the same vehicle is not a problem in a transfer case, but a ratio different from your original will change your low-range crawl speed and how the vehicle behaves in four-low.

Why remanufactured is usually the right call here
Transfer cases fail in predictable ways — chains stretch, pump housings wear through the case, and shift forks wear. A remanufactured unit addresses all of those regardless of which one caused your failure. Given that the labour to drop and refit a transfer case is identical either way, spending less on a unit with unknown chain wear is often a false economy.
