Differential Gear Ratios Explained: How to Find What You Need
Differentials are simple to describe and easy to buy incorrectly. Two carriers can be the same size, from the same manufacturer, and fit the same axle housing — and still be wrong, because the gear ratio does not match the other axle, or the carrier is built for a different ratio range entirely.
This guide covers how to find your ratio, what a carrier break is, and why open and limited-slip units are not always interchangeable.
What the ratio actually means

A gear ratio such as 3.73 describes how many times the driveshaft turns for one rotation of the wheels. A 3.73 ratio means 3.73 driveshaft rotations per wheel rotation.
- Numerically higher ratios (4.10, 4.56) give more mechanical advantage — better acceleration and towing, lower top-end, higher cruising RPM and more fuel used at speed.
- Numerically lower ratios (3.08, 3.23) give relaxed highway cruising and better economy, but less pulling power off the line.
Neither is better in the abstract. The right ratio depends on your tyre diameter, your transmission’s top-gear ratio, and what you actually do with the vehicle.
Four ways to find your current ratio

- Count it. Jack up both rear wheels, mark the driveshaft, and rotate the wheels exactly one full turn while counting driveshaft rotations. Roughly 3.7 turns means a 3.73; roughly 4.1 means a 4.10.
- Read the ring gear. With the cover off, the ring gear is usually stamped with its tooth counts — for example 41/11, which divides out to 3.73.
If you are replacing one axle’s carrier on a four-wheel-drive vehicle, the front and rear ratios must match. Mismatched ratios will destroy the transfer case.
Carrier breaks: the detail that catches people out
Within one axle model, the carrier is built in more than one variant depending on the ratio range. A carrier designed for numerically lower ratios will not accept a numerically higher ring gear, because the ring gear mounting position differs.
This is called a carrier break. On many common axles the break falls somewhere around the 3.73 mark — carriers for ratios up to that point are one casting, and ratios beyond it use another. The practical consequence is that you cannot always keep your existing carrier and simply fit different gears; sometimes the carrier has to change too.

Open, limited-slip and locking

Identify your axle before your ratio
Axles are usually described by their ring gear diameter and manufacturer. Common examples include the Ford 8.8, GM 8.25, GM 9.25, Dana 30, Dana 35 and Dana 44.
You can identify most axles by the shape of the differential cover, the number of cover bolts, and the ring gear diameter measured across the gear face. Front and rear axles on the same vehicle are frequently different models, so identify each separately.
Changing tyre size? Recalculate
Fitting larger tyres effectively lowers your ratio numerically — the vehicle behaves as though it has taller gearing. A truck that drove well on 3.73 gears with stock tyres will feel noticeably sluggish on significantly larger tyres, and the speedometer will read low.
As a rule of thumb, a meaningful increase in tyre diameter usually calls for moving one ratio step numerically higher to restore the original driving character.
