Engine Displacement Explained: What 2.4L, 3.5L and 5.7L Really Mean
Engine listings are full of numbers like 2.4L, 3.5L and 5.7L. Most buyers know these describe engine size, but not what the figure actually measures, why two engines with the same displacement are not interchangeable, or how to work out which one their vehicle has.
Here is what displacement means in practice, and how to use it when shopping for a replacement.
What displacement measures
Displacement is the total volume swept by all the pistons as they travel from the bottom to the top of their stroke. It is calculated from the cylinder bore, the piston stroke, and the number of cylinders, and expressed in litres or cubic inches.
A 2.4-litre four-cylinder displaces 2.4 litres in total across its four cylinders — roughly 600cc per cylinder. A 5.7-litre V8 displaces 5.7 litres across eight.
Older American engines are often quoted in cubic inches instead. One litre is approximately 61 cubic inches, so a 5.7L is about 350 cubic inches — which is why you will see the same engine family described both ways.

What displacement tells you — and what it does not
Broadly, greater displacement means more air and fuel per cycle, and therefore more potential torque. That is why larger engines dominate towing applications.
But displacement on its own is a poor predictor of output. A modern turbocharged 2.0-litre can comfortably out-produce an older naturally aspirated 4.0-litre, because forced induction, direct injection and variable valve timing all raise the output available from a given volume. Displacement tells you the size of the pump, not how hard it is being worked.
The critical point: same displacement does not mean interchangeable
This is where buyers go wrong. Displacement is a description of size, not a part number. Two engines can both be 3.5-litre V6 units from the same manufacturer, the same model year, and still share almost nothing.
Within one displacement figure, engines vary in:

Displacement narrows the search. Your VIN finishes it. Never order on displacement alone.
How to find your engine code
The engine code is what actually identifies your engine. There are several ways to find it:
- Your VIN. On most vehicles one character of the VIN encodes the engine. This is the most reliable method available to an owner.
- The underbonnet emissions label. Usually states displacement and often the engine family.
- Stamped or cast into the block. Location varies by manufacturer — commonly on a machined pad near the front of the block or on the bellhousing flange.
- The build or service records for the vehicle.
Once you have the engine code, matching a replacement becomes straightforward.
Common displacements and what they suit
- 1.5L – 2.0L — compact cars and small crossovers, prioritising economy. See 2.0L engines.
- 2.4L – 2.5L — mid-size sedans and small SUVs. See 2.4L engines.
- 3.5L – 3.6L — the standard V6 range for larger sedans, minivans and mid-size SUVs. See 3.5L engines.
- 5.3L – 5.7L — full-size truck and SUV V8s. See 5.7L engines.
- 6.6L – 6.7L — heavy-duty diesel applications.
Does a bigger engine wear out faster?
Not inherently. A large engine working lightly is often under less stress than a small engine working hard. A V8 cruising at low RPM may be doing an easier job than a small turbocharged four maintaining the same speed under load.
What actually determines engine life is maintenance, operating temperature, oil quality and change intervals, and whether the engine spends its life at sustained high load. Duty cycle beats displacement every time.
Using displacement when shopping
Displacement is a useful first filter and a poor final answer. Use it to narrow the field, then confirm with the engine code or VIN before ordering.
